I was involved with the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) for more than ten years from my late teens. When I joined I was desperate to feel better about myself and get free from the drug culture in which I was involved. The FWBO seemed to be a place where I'd get help and receive the "friendship" the order holds so precious. When I left I was suicidal and nearly hospitalised in a mental health unit.
